KrownCorp sent Guy Melhuish to listen and learn as the Tire and Rubber association of Canada met to discuss the challenges facing the Rubber Recycling industry in 2019. He looked even more lost after 2 days at the symposium.

“Companies had a chance to network and discuss the challenges facing the industry in 2019.” As the delegates gathered at the start of the symposium it was an opportunity for some of the larger, well established companies, to meet and mingle, with some smaller, newer members of the Tire Association.

As the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada gathered in Niagara to “TAKE SUSTAINABILITY TO THE NEXT LEVEL” I realized the relevance [or maybe irony] of being at Niagara Falls.

It was not lost on me, as I stared out of my hotel window at the millions of gallons of water tipping over the gorge, that Nature had provided the perfect backdrop for anyone wishing to debate recycling. Or what is also called “The Circular Economy”

Simply put our job is to mimic nature and at the same time make sure we do not interfere with the balance that nature has created for itself.

“Rubber back into Rubber “was one of the mantras from Kedar Murthy from Lehigh Technologies. It certainly has a catchy ring about it.

The symposium was dominated by the new Ontario legislation that will take effect on January 1st 2019. The opening speech from Glenn Maidment referred to “lots of uncertainty and anxiety in the room”

The Host Sponsor was eTracks they are: “a new established “not for profit” organization born out of a new rubber and tire recycling model in Ontario” There mandate “to provide fulfilment services for member and obligated producer EOL tire recycling, tracking, compliance, and reporting, obligations in accordance with Ontario EOL tire regulations”

Many of the different panels and lectures were debating the pros and cons of the coming changes.

Excellent insight was given by Lyle Clarke and I also had the opportunity to talk with Andrew Horsman, who shared with me his concerns for the new Ontario laws. Andrew and Lyle had worked together, on the previous Ontario programs for recycling

As well as the introduction of eTrack I was also able to talk with other new P.R.O companies that have been recently established to help sort through the new legislation In particular I met with YESS Executive Director Sarah Webb. Sarah’s insight and experience will prove crucial to many companies over the next few years as the new rules and regulations unfold. Her company YESS also provided that best looking Coffee Mugs, which was a welcome relief to the normal paper cups that have to be recycled? .

Canadian Tire was present and I talked with Kent Wootton about many other issues facing retail in Canada.

I opened a new subscription with the Scrap Tire News Magazine, and look forward to receiving the January edition.

KrownCORP will certainly be at next year’s Symposium and I would like to think that some of the water I saw cascading along in 2018, will be back in the river by 2019 so that I can watch in wonder as it tumbles endlessly over the edge again and again.

KrownCorp sent Guy Melhuish to listen and learn as the Tire and Rubber association of Canada met to discuss the challenges facing 2019 Rubber Recycling industry.
Some very large companies had the opportunity to talk with smaller companies regarding the changes that will affect all of them in 2019.
